Urinary Incontinence FAQ's

If urinary incontinence affects your daily activities or quality of life, or if you're concerned about urinary leakage, it's essential to seek medical advice. There are treatments available that can improve or completely resolve symptoms. North Scottsdale Women's Care can help.

Urinary incontinence refers to the unintentional leakage of urine. It can range from a small amount of leakage when you cough or sneeze to having an urge to urinate that's so sudden and strong you can't get to a toilet in time.

There are several types of urinary incontinence, including:

  • Stress incontinence: Leakage happens with exertion such as coughing, sneezing, or exercise.
  • Urge incontinence: There's a sudden and intense urge to urinate followed by an involuntary loss of urine.
  • Overflow incontinence: Frequent or constant dripping of urine due to a bladder that doesn't empty completely.
  • Functional incontinence: Elderly people with a physical or mental impairment cannot make it to the toilet in time.
  • Mixed incontinence: More than one type of urinary incontinence.

We specialize in the female reproductive system and are trained to diagnose and treat conditions related to female urinary incontinence. We may use methods ranging from pelvic floor exercises to surgical interventions.

Yes. Non-surgical treatments include:

  • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises): Strengthening the muscles that help control urination.
  • Bladder training: Scheduling toilet trips and gradually increasing the time between urination.
  • Medications: To calm an overactive bladder or help the bladder empty more fully.
  • Physical therapy: Working with a specialist to strengthen pelvic muscles.Add an answer to this item.

  • Sling procedures: Using synthetic material or your own tissue to create a sling around the urethra to lift it back into a normal position.
  • Bladder neck suspension: An abdominal procedure to provide support to the urethra and bladder neck.
  • Prolapse surgery: Performed when incontinence is caused by a prolapse of the bladder or nearby structure.

Recovery times vary based on the specific procedure. On average, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks post-surgery. Always follow the specific recovery guidelines provided by us.
