Pelvic Ultrasound FAQ's

At North Scottsdale Women's Care we have an in-office ultrasound. It is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create images of the reproductive area or the breast tissue. It doesn't use radiation and is considered a great tool for diagnosing.

An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to make an image of a person's internal body structures.

For most people, a standard ultrasound does not hurt. The procedure involves using a handheld device called a transducer that emits sound waves. The transducer is moved across the skin, which has been coated with a special gel to help improve the quality of the images and to allow smooth movement of the transducer. Here are a few things to note about the sensation and comfort during an ultrasound:

  1. Pressure: You may feel some pressure as the sonographer (the technician performing the ultrasound) presses the transducer against the area being examined, especially if they are trying to get closer images of deeper structures.
  2. Temperature: The gel used can feel a bit cold when first applied to the skin, but it warms up quickly.
  3. Internal Ultrasounds: A transvaginal ultrasound, involves inserting a special transducer into the vagina. While this can be uncomfortable for some people, it shouldn't be painful. If it is, you should communicate with the sonographer or medical provider.
  4. Tightness from Filled Bladder: For certain types of ultrasounds, such as a pelvic ultrasound, you might be asked to come with a full bladder. The sensation of a full bladder can be uncomfortable for some individuals.
  5. Tenderness: If the area being scanned is tender or sensitive (for instance, an inflamed joint or an area with an injury), you might experience some discomfort when the transducer is pressed against it.
  6. Duration: Most ultrasound exams are quick and painless. However, if the exam is prolonged, holding a certain position might become slightly uncomfortable.

  1. Pregnancy Confirmation: To confirm and date a pregnancy, and to check the fetus's heartbeat.
  2. Miscarriage Concerns: If there are concerns about a miscarriage, an ultrasound can determine if the pregnancy is viable.
  3. Ectopic Pregnancy: To determine if a pregnancy is developing outside the uterus, which can be life-threatening.
  4. Pelvic Pain: To diagnose the cause of pelvic pain which could be due to various reasons such as cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, or other conditions.
  5. Ovarian Cysts: To evaluate the size, shape, and type of cyst, and to monitor any changes over time.
  6. Uterine Fibroids: To detect, measure, and monitor growths in the uterus.
  7. Menstrual Abnormalities: In cases of irregular or heavy periods, an ultrasound can help determine the cause.
  8. Infertility: As part of infertility assessments, an ultrasound can evaluate the health of reproductive organs and detect any abnormalities that might be affecting fertility.
  9. Guidance for Procedures: For certain procedures, such as aspiration of ovarian cysts or guided biopsies.
  10. IUD Placement Verification: To ensure intrauterine devices (IUDs) are properly placed and haven't shifted or perforated the uterus.
  11. Check Ovulation: In fertility treatments, ultrasounds can check for ovulation and the development of the follicles in the ovaries.
